Still Life Workshop

Cuyahoga Valley Art Center

STILL LIFE WORKSHOP

BEGINNER to ADVANCED Level OIL PAINTING
with Amy Gibson
MARCH 28-29, 2020                9:30 – 4:30 PM
Member: $150                Non-Member: $175
In this workshop you will learn how to paint a still life in oil using the direct painting method. We will go over lighting, composition, transferring a drawing, underpainting techniques, color and color theory, and the importance of edge quality.
Working from direct observation is an important tool for learning how to paint. Your eye picks up so much information that is often lost in a photo. This workshop will give you a process that works and is also a great foundation to starting and completing your paintings.
Students will be required to bring their own supplies, supply list provided.

Listening

“Perhaps we just need little reminders from time to time that we are already dignified, deserving, worthy. “If you stop trying to make yourself more than you are, out of fear that you are less than you are, whoever you really are will be a lot lighter and happier and easier to live with, too.”
 --Jon Kabat Zinn

This painting is about listening. Listening to your body, Listening to your health. It's easy to get caught up in the day to day stresses of life. I have been practicing mindfulness for a while now and I have to tell you it isn't easy.  So take a moment to focus on your breath .. or hey use that apple to make a martini and chill out!

Falling

"We always called maple seeds whirlybirds,
just as we always did so many things, as children.
We liked them best when they were yellow--
when tossed alone, in twos, or even bunches--
they came swirling down. Too green,
they fell with a plop. Too brown, too thin to fly,
or they fell apart, exposing their spider veins
like the vertical strings on a badminton racket.
If we had rain, mush, beside the welcome mat.
But this morning, sailing swiftly by my window,
catching the light--white and lovely,
delicate of drift--landing in a driveway crack
or in gutters in the fertile loam that once was
other maple leaves, those ’copters from the sky--
unshaken in purpose--became a circle of trees."
